Voter Turnout in Swing States

Further to our meeting with MetroWest Blue and Beyond back in February, I have compiled a list of education (501c3) non-profits in swing states that focus on voter turn out. The list comes from GuideStar, a website that rates non-profits. The EIN numbers are useful if you are donating not via ActBlue but from a before-tax fund like a Donor Advised Fund or a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) at age 70.5+ from an IRA

…to canvass for Warren for Senate in Sudbury. No experience needed, just bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and your (hopefully reusable) water bottle. After a short speech from Carmine you’ll receive your “turf map” (about 30 houses), door hangers, and talking points. Then it’s off to the races!

If you have a smartphone, download the miniVAN app from NGP VAN https://www.ngpvan.com/ and open the app to create an ActionID login. If not, we can provide the info on paper.

Date: This Saturday, July 27, 2024

Start time: 11:45am (tentative: sign up to get updated info)

Place: Sign up to receive the kick off address. After the kick off (hopefully by 12:15pm or so) you go to your assigned “turf” somewhere in Sudbury.

End time: You should be done by about 2pm.

Caucus to Elect Delegates

On March 9 at 10 a.m., Democrats will convene at First Parish, 327 Concord Road, Sudbury, to elect 13 delegates and 4 alternates to represent Sudbury at the 2024 State Democratic Convention. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and close at 10:15 a.m.

Registered and pre-registered Democrats in Sudbury 16 years old by Feb. 15 may vote and be elected as delegates or alternates during the caucus. Youth (age 16 to 35), people with disabilities, people of color, veterans, members of the LGBTQ+ community not elected as delegates or alternates are encouraged to apply to be add-on delegates at the caucus or by visiting massdems.org/massdems-convention. The 2024 Convention will be in person at the DCU Center in Worcester on June 1. At the conclusion of the caucus, a conference will be held to elect 13 representatives to the Senate District Conference on March 23 2 p.m. (location tbd) and elect one person to fill a male State Committee member seat.

How to defeat Donald Trump

Update: Metrowest Blue and Beyond are hosting a Zoom presentation August 6th, 7:30pm. Register at this link https://www.mwblueandbeyond.com/register-for-august-6-2024-event

All of us in Massachusetts have the frustration of “I’m in a blue state: what can I do to defeat Donnie?”

Senator Dave Magnani (ret.) gave a stunningly simple answer at our Speaker night on February 9th: “Help people in underrepresented areas to vote.”

How? Dave has a low tech answer “Train local young folk to knock on doors in their community, and tell folk how to register to vote and how important and easy it is to do. And pay the door knockers something to do it”

Why local young folk? Because the door opener need to see someone they trust on their door step, someone from their community.

Why pay them? They are economically disadvantaged so you can’t expect them to spend the hours and hours this takes and get nothing that pays their bill in return. Besides, the dollars put money into economically disadvantaged communities, so win-win.

But here’s the kicker: Because voter registration is non-partisan, your dollar contributions to the organizations that do it are tax-deductible by you the donor! You can donate from you pre-tax IRA (if you are over 70 1/2), from a Donor Advised Fund if you have one, or claim a deduction if you itemize (consult your CPA: I am not a tax advisor).

I think is a far more efficient way of moving the needle than us funding campaign ads or rallies or speeches. What is the point of sounding off if your potential audience isn’t even registered to vote?

This is best idea I’ve heard in a long time. Their current goal is 40,000 new voters in North Carolina.

If you want to donate via ActBlue, the page is here:

Unfortunately, you want to donate from a Donor Advised Fund etc, they usually won’t let you do it via ActBlue. However, you can donate directly to the 501c3 voter registration organizations picked out by Dave’s organization directly. They have funny names but they are:

1) Action for the Climate Emergency EIN 26-3106566 (GuideStar page https://nonprofitdirectory.guidestar.org/profile/26-3106566/70D330C6C4D046F2B30C4C55D160009D )

2) NC A Philip Randolph Institute Inc EIN 56-1500282 (GuideStar page https://nonprofitdirectory.guidestar.org/profile/56-1500282/70D330C6C4D046F2B30C4C55D160009D )
