How to defeat Donald Trump

Update: Metrowest Blue and Beyond are hosting a Zoom presentation August 6th, 7:30pm. Register at this link https://www.mwblueandbeyond.com/register-for-august-6-2024-event

All of us in Massachusetts have the frustration of “I’m in a blue state: what can I do to defeat Donnie?”

Senator Dave Magnani (ret.) gave a stunningly simple answer at our Speaker night on February 9th: “Help people in underrepresented areas to vote.”

How? Dave has a low tech answer “Train local young folk to knock on doors in their community, and tell folk how to register to vote and how important and easy it is to do. And pay the door knockers something to do it”

Why local young folk? Because the door opener need to see someone they trust on their door step, someone from their community.

Why pay them? They are economically disadvantaged so you can’t expect them to spend the hours and hours this takes and get nothing that pays their bill in return. Besides, the dollars put money into economically disadvantaged communities, so win-win.

But here’s the kicker: Because voter registration is non-partisan, your dollar contributions to the organizations that do it are tax-deductible by you the donor! You can donate from you pre-tax IRA (if you are over 70 1/2), from a Donor Advised Fund if you have one, or claim a deduction if you itemize (consult your CPA: I am not a tax advisor).

I think is a far more efficient way of moving the needle than us funding campaign ads or rallies or speeches. What is the point of sounding off if your potential audience isn’t even registered to vote?

This is best idea I’ve heard in a long time. Their current goal is 40,000 new voters in North Carolina.

If you want to donate via ActBlue, the page is here:

https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mwbb-nc2-22

Unfortunately, you want to donate from a Donor Advised Fund etc, they usually won’t let you do it via ActBlue. However, you can donate directly to the 501c3 voter registration organizations picked out by Dave’s organization directly. They have funny names but they are:

Guest Speaker: David Magnani – former State Senator

Title: METROWEST BLUE AND BEYOND (MWBB)

Speaker: Former State Senator David Magnani

When: Wednesday. February 7th, 2024 at 7:00PM

Where: Goodnow Public Library, 21 Concord Road, Sudbury MA 01776

From the speaker:

“It’s a big election year and I’ve been thinking about how I can make a difference. Perhaps you share my frustration that there is little I can do in Massachusetts that will have much of an impact on the Presidential election. The outcome of the Presidential election will be decided by voters in a handful of other states.”

That’s where “Metrowest Blue and Beyond” (MWBB) comes in!!!

“We research and provide support to on-the-ground community organizers in three key swing states. In this election cycle we are providing support to organizations in Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

“MWBB uses strict criteria to screen the organizations they support. The organizations must be local, have a track record of success, and they must directly recruit, hire, train, and pay community organizers. They must also have a focus on communities of color, low propensity voters, and critical voting geographies. This model proved very successful in both the 2020 and 2022 elections, with MWBB playing a role in each of those elections.

MWBB has

● experience,

● a successful model, and

● an experienced leadership team”

Food Drive in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Please join the Sudbury Democratic Town Committee in honoring the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by donating to the Sudbury Food Pantry.

Monday, January 15, 2024

10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Drop off at 30 Meadowbrook Circle, Sudbury

Items needed include:

  • Canned Meals (chunky soups etc)
  • Cereal: all types of boxed and instant cereals
  • Canned Tomato: sauce and diced
  • Pasta:  all kinds
  • Boxed Rice (Near East, Rice A Roni)
  • Boxed Potatoes

Please note that unfortunately the Pantry doesn’t have facilities to accept and store fresh produce.

About the need that Sudbury Food pantry serves:

We recently completed our annual year-end client-visit analysis and I thought I’d share some of our findings. In 2023, we served 992 individual clients (327 new for 2023) who in turn picked up food for 3191 family members in 79 cities and towns. Client visits grew by 10% over 2022 and 54% over 2021.

While many economic indicators signal inflation is easing, food is not one of them, particularly in our community. A recently released report by Consumer Affairs found grocery prices nationwide were 5.3% higher in November than a year ago, while prices in Massachusetts were 6.6% higher (#6 highest increase among 50 states). While an improvement from 2022, over two years, prices have spiked 25.5 percent which roughly corresponds to the demand we’ve seen for the Pantry’s services over the past two years.

These numbers help explain why your work and collected donations are so important to serving those who may not be able to simply dig a little deeper into a pocket to make up the difference at the grocery store. Your time and effort truly makes a difference!

Good luck and thanks! – JT, Paul and Mary
